History of the Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme

The Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme is one of the undergraduate programmes under the Faculty of Education (FE), Universitas PGRI Semarang. The Study Programme has a strong commitment to providing high-quality teacher education by preparing prospective elementary school educators who are professional, innovative, creative, and able to respond to the development of education, science, and technology.

The Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme at Universitas PGRI Semarang was officially established on 18 June 2009 based on Decree Number 981/D/T/2009. Since its establishment, the Study Programme has carried out academic activities as part of the institution’s commitment to supporting the development of elementary education through the preparation of competent teachers with strong pedagogical knowledge, professional skills, character values, and the ability to implement innovative learning practices.

During its early development, the Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme continuously strengthened its academic foundation through curriculum development, improvement of teaching and learning quality, enhancement of lecturer competencies, and the development of research and community engagement activities. The programme was designed to address the increasing demand for qualified elementary school teachers who are capable of facilitating meaningful learning experiences and supporting students’ holistic development.

On 17 April 2014, following the institutional transformation into Universitas PGRI Semarang, the Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme entered a new phase of development within a broader university ecosystem. This transformation provided greater opportunities for the Study Programme to strengthen academic governance, expand collaboration, integrate technology into learning, and develop innovative approaches in elementary education.

Throughout its academic journey, the Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme has continuously improved the quality of education through curriculum innovation, student-centred learning approaches, research activities, community engagement programmes, and partnerships with educational institutions and stakeholders. Its commitment to educational quality was demonstrated by achieving C Accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) based on Decree Number 032/BAN-PT/Ak-XV/S1/X/2012 dated 18 October 2012. As part of its continuous quality improvement efforts, the Study Programme successfully achieved the highest accreditation rating, “Excellent” (Unggul) from the Independent Accreditation Agency for Education (LAMDIK) based on Decree Number 145/SK/LAMDIK/Ak/S/II/2024. This accreditation is valid for five years, from 19 February 2024 to 18 February 2029.

The Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme focuses on strengthening knowledge and expertise in the fields of Personality Development, Elementary Education Foundation Knowledge, Pedagogical Studies, Arts Education, and Technology Studies. Through a curriculum designed to be completed within 4 years (8 semesters) with a total study load of 144 credits (216 ECTS), the programme is committed to producing graduates who possess strong competencies in elementary education, classroom management, learning innovation, educational research, technology-based learning, and character development.

The achievement of Excellent Accreditation reflects the commitment of the Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme to implementing continuous quality assurance and maintaining high academic standards. This recognition demonstrates the consistency of the Study Programme in developing innovative elementary education practices, strengthening academic quality, and preparing graduates who are competitive and adaptive to educational changes.

Today, the Elementary Teacher Education Study Programme at Universitas PGRI Semarang continues to be committed to improving the quality of education through strengthening learning processes, developing sustainable research, implementing community engagement programmes, and expanding collaborations at both national and international levels. Supported by professional academic staff, an adaptive curriculum, and an innovative academic environment, the programme strives to produce excellent elementary school educators with strong character, pedagogical competence, digital literacy, creativity, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of elementary education and society.
